Gator Defense Shuts Down Denison
Feb 1, 2003 The Allegheny college women's basketball
team held Denison University to 25.4 percent shooting in the game
and built a 18 point lead at half to hold on for a 62-57 win in North
Coast Athletic Conference action at the David V. Wise Center on Saturday
afternoon. The Gators (9-10, 7-3) shot 51.9 percent in the first half
led by Sophomore Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic)
who scored all 10 of her points in the first half going 4-of-5 from
the field, and finished with nine boards.
Freshman Courtney Steding (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry)
recorded her fourth double-double of the season, leading all players
with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Steding has reached double-digit scoring
in eight consecutive games.
The Gators opened the game hot, building a 10-0 lead
before Denison scored 5:04 into the first half. Allegheny continued
the hot shooting in the first half and built a 38-20 lead when freshman
Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) hit a three-pointer with 17
seconds left in the half.
The tables turned in the second half, however, as Allegheny's
hot hand turned cold. The Gators managed to hit just 21.7 percent
in the second half, but their rebounding and defense secured the lead.
Allegheny held Denison to 28.2 percent shooting in the second half
and outrebounded the Big Red, 55-33, for the game.
Four players reached double-digits for the Gators led
by Steding and McDonough. Junior Kristin Kramarik (Natrona Heights,
Pa./Highland) added 13 and Medwid chipped in with 11 points.
Meghan Overon led Denison (9-8, 4-5 NCAC) with 13 points,
going 2-8 from the field and 9-10 from the charity stripe.
The Gators next game is scheduled for Friday, February
7, as they travel to Earlham for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
