Gators Dominate Paint In Win Over Hiram
Jan 29, 2003 The Allegheny College women's basketball
team scored 44 points in the paint, led by 19 points from freshman forward
Courtney Steding (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry), in a 73-63 win over North
Coast Athletic Conference opponent Hiram College on Wednesday night.
Steding also added 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.
It was also the seventh consecutive game that she scored in double digits.
Sophomore forward Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland
Catholic) just missed getting herself a double-double as she dropped
in 14 points and added nine boards. Overall, the Gators outrebounded
the Terriers 51-40, including 26 offensive rebounds. In addition to
tough play in the paint, Allegheny forced 28 turnovers, 19 coming off
steals, and scored 39 points as a result.
Hiram came out tough and took an early 16-6 lead just
over five minutes into the game and extended it to 12 by the 9:25 mark
of the first half. Allegheny fought back with an 18-3 run to take a
26-23 lead on McDonough's lay-up with 7:01 remaining in the half. Hiram
went back out to a five-point lead, but again the Gators went on a run
to finish the first half up, 37-33.
Freshman guard Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour)
scored all 12 of her points in the first half to spark the Allegheny
offense, going 4-8 from the field with two three-pointers.
The Gators never trailed in the second half eventually
taking the 73-63 victory. Freshman guard Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park,
Pa./Seton-LaSalle) added 10 points, three assists and three steals for
Allegheny.
Terra Roane had a solid game for the Terriers with 15
points and 15 rebounds while teammate Tiffany Tompkins added 19 points.
The Gators return to the David Wise Center on Saturday,
February 1, when they host Denison at 1:00 p.m. The game is part of
National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Saturday also serves as Community
Day and Allegheny will also take part in the NCAA's "Take a Kid
to the Game" program.
