Steding's Career High Leads Gators To Sweep Of Kenyon
Jan 25, 2003 Freshman forward Courtney Steding (McDonald,
Pa./Fort Cherry) scored a career-high 20 points to lead the Allegheny
College women's basketball team to a 60-51 win over Kenyon College
in North Coast Athletic Conference action at the David Wise Center
on Saturday afternoon. Steding hit eight straight shots from the field
after missing the first two shots of the game, finishing 8-10 from
the field and 4-5 from the charity stripe, as the Gators sweep the
two-game season series.
A smothering Gator defense forced the Kenyon Ladies
to commit 27 turnovers and held them to 37.0 percent shooting in the
game.
Allegheny held a 27-19 lead at the half thanks to a
staunch defense that held the Ladies to 29.2 percent shooting. However,
it was the Gators that struggled shooting to open the second stanza.
After a jumper by Steding made it 30-19 at 18:59 of the second half,
Allegheny didn't get their next field goal until 15:52. It was another
5:50 seconds before the Gators made it 34-27. Kenyon pulled within
three points twice down the stretch, but couldn't get any closer.
Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) and Meredith
McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) each scored eight points
as the Gators had 10 players that recorded at least one point.
Dana Halicki led Kenyon with 15 points while Katy Zeanah
and Eileen wittman added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The Gators next game is scheduled for Wednesday, January
29, as they continue their NCAC schedule at Hiram. That game is slated
for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
