First Half Shooting Carries Gators To Win

The Allegheny College women's basketball team shot 51.6 percent in the first half to propel themselves to a 70-63 win over host Oberlin College in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Tuesday night. The Gators also held a distinct advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Yeowomen 51-37 in the game.
Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) and Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park, Pa./Seton-LaSalle) shared high scoring honors for Allegheny with 13 points. McDonough did her scoring in the first half, going 4-of-10 and hitting two free throws in the first 20 minutes, and finished the game with eight rebounds. Murtagh was 6-of-9 in the game with five rebounds.
With the game tied at 12-12 midway through the first stanza, Allegheny went on a 12-0 run and finished the half by extending their lead to 14 when the halftime buzzer went off. Oberlin cut the lead to three points twice late in the game, but the Gators held on for the win.
Allegheny played strong defense again, holding the Yeowomen to 32.8 percent shooting in the game and just five field goals in the first half. The Gators finished up 29-of-66 from the field, 43.9 percent.
Oberlin's Malisha Richardson led all scorers with 19 points and added 10 rebounds. Courtney Steding (McDonald, Pa./Forth Cherry) continued her solid freshman season for the Gators by scoring 12 points and adding six rebounds. Valery Medwid (Coraopolis, Pa./Montour) came off the bench to score 10 and add six boards.
The Gators are on the road on Saturday, January 18, as they travel to Delaware, Ohio, to take on Ohio Wesleyan in an NCAC match-up at 1:00 p.m.
