Late Gator Rally Falls Short AGainst Westminster
January 9, 2003
The Allegheny College women's basketball team cut into Westminster's 12-point halftime lead to get within three with 5:41 remaining, but the Lady Titans responded with a run of their own to take the non-conference game, 70-60, at the David V. Wise Center. Titan Erica Tallo (Oakdale, Pa./West Allegheny) had a good night, registering a game-high 19 points, 13 rebounds and added four assists, four blocks and four steals.
Caitlin Murtagh (Bethel Park, Pa./Seton LaSalle) was the top scorer for the Gators, hitting on 6-of-10 shots for a career-high 16 points. Courtney Steding (McDonald, Pa./Fort Cherry) recorded her second double-double in three games, scoring 10 points and recording a season-high 13 rebounds.
Westminster (4-8, 0-0 PAC) came out firing, hitting on 58.6 percent of their shots in the first half to stake a 39-27 lead going into the half. The Gators (3-9, 1-2 NCAC) struggled shooting in the game, going 23-65 (35.4 percent) in the game.
After Tallo made it a 53-41 game for the Titans, Allegheny started to mount a comeback effort. The Gators went on an 11-2 run to pull within three. However, Westminster responded with their own 13-4 run that included a pair of three pointers to re-establish a 12-point lead they would not relinquish.
Meredith McDonough (Pittsburgh, Pa./Oakland Catholic) added 10 points for the Gators. Ashley Kenney (Greensburg, Pa./Hempsfield) had 15 for Westminster and Mary Jane Eaton (Rimersburg, Pa./Union) chipped in with 12 points off the bench.
