Student Organizations Dedicated to Service

Alpha Phi Omega: A national co-ed service fraternity, APO is committed to the principles of leadership, fellowship and service. APO's chapter has served the Allegheny and Meadville communities for 25 years.

Fraternities and sororities: These organizations regularly engage in service projects, volunteering with organizations such as Women's Services, the Furniture Closet and Tri-State Food Share. The Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils, governing bodies of the Greek system at Allegheny, co-sponsor "Greek Service Day" with the Office of Community Service.

Gators Aid: In conjunction with the local United Way, students and local supervisors repair substandard housing for people unable to make repairs themselves.

Habitat for Humanity: This national organization engages community members in the construction of affordable housing for people in need. Students work with the local Habitat chapter and with chapters in other states.

Religious organizations: Allegheny Christian Outreach, Sojourners and Allegheny Newman sponsor volunteer activities both on and off campus. Members have traveled to destinations such as Haiti, Jamaica, Kentucky and Fayette County, Pa.

Many other student organizations, such as the Association for Asian and Asian American Awareness (A5), Allegheny Student Government, and Students for Environmental Action actively engage in community service.

 

Student Awards and Recognition

Lambda Sigma Honor Society: This national honorary society for sophomores promotes fellowship, leadership, scholarship and the spirit of service. Selection is competitive and based on grade point average, extracurricular activities, and community and campus service.

Leadership Program Recognition Banquet Awards: Each spring, Allegheny honors students and organizations whose valuable leadership and service activities deserve recognition.

Omicron Delta Kappa: This national leadership honor society is open to all juniors and seniors in the top third of their class who have attained distinction in scholarship, service or leadership activities.
