Support for the senior comprehensive project. Part of the College's academic program for more than fifty years, the Senior Comp is the capstone of an Allegheny education. This distinctive educational experience builds on students' coursework and interests. It develops intellectual curiosity, analytical and communication skills, and the ability to work independently.
Additional funds for research and travel will give students in all disciplines the resources they need to tackle even the most ambitious Senior Comps, such as the work done by Becky Waddell '01 and Dana Mackowiak '01. Becky's research on the microbial breakdown of triclosan, an antimicrobial agent used in many household products, has been incorporated into an article in a prestigious international journal. Dana's original verse won the top poetry prize of the only national undergraduate literary review in the United States.
"One of the biggest things I learned from my comp was the importance of taking a stand, of speaking up for what's right. That's something that is encouraged at Allegheny, and something I've had to do at critical points in my career." - Kristine Reed Garrett '80, president and CEO of Bank One in Arizona
Support for international students. When we bring an international student to Allegheny College, the campus gains not just a student but a window on an entire culture. Our international students not only experience firsthand the diversity of American culture, but they also add their own cultural perspectives and enliven and enhance campus life in innumerable ways.
When Associate Professor of Biology Glen Wurst donated the funds for a scholarship for international students, he said, "International students bring a cosmopolitan flavor and a diverse worldview to campus. It's important that Allegheny, as a liberal arts institution, exposes its students to an array of perspectives - not only so they can learn about those differences, but more importantly, to realize that there are many ways to make sense of the world and our place in it."
Investing in the Future
Alumni and friends of the College are Allegheny's most generous supporters. You, more than anyone, know the true value of an Allegheny education - an education that is far more than the sum of its parts. By participating in Tradition & Transformation, you can help place that education within the reach of every student who has worked hard to earn a place on campus. Please join us in investing in the College's future - and in paying tribute to our extraordinary past.
"Why do we support Allegheny? It's simple: Allegheny changed our lives. We reap the benefits every day of the excellent faculty who taught us, the lifelong friendships we made, and the many opportunities we have had to interact with current students and other alumni from different generations. Allegheny is a great institution. And Allegheny deserves great support." - Cora Kraus Ransford '40 and Herbert Ransford '38
