Scholarship Established to Honor Frederick and Marion Steen

The children of Dr. Frederick Steen, professor emeritus of mathematics, and his late wife, Marion, have established a scholarship at Allegheny College to honor their parents.

The Frederick and Marion Steen Mathematics Scholarship will benefit students who demonstrate a strong understanding of mathematics, the ability to communicate and enthuse others with the beauty of mathematics, and a commitment to put mathematics to purpose in a teaching, engineering or scientific profession.

Dr. Steen officially retired in 1977 after 35 years at Allegheny, but continued to teach full- and part-time at the College for several more years. During his tenure, he served as secretary of the faculty for 20 years and chair of the Mathematics Department for 27 years.

The scholarship was established through gifts from John Steen, Martha Steen Whitney '63, Paul Steen, Robert Steen and Rodger Steen.

The first recipient of the scholarship is Brian Stanley '07, a mathematics major and economics minor from Worthington, Pa. Stanley is pictured at right with Dr. Steen.
