Investing in Academics

Equipment and tools. Well-equipped labs, classrooms, and practice/rehearsal rooms - all are basic prerequisites for giving our students the best education possible. But keeping up with technology isn't a sprint - it's a marathon. Equipment rapidly becomes outdated, and new technologies that can greatly enhance the effectiveness of the classroom experience are constantly being developed.

Debate.jpgEven a single piece of new equipment can have an enormous effect on faculty and student research, as Associate Professor of Biology Ann Kleinschmidt can attest. When an alumna who works for a major pharmaceutical firm donated $5,000 for the College to purchase a thermal cycler, her gift was matched by her employer. "Faculty research, Senior Comps, lab classes, and summer programs have benefited from having this piece of equipment," says Kleinschmidt, "and all because of the generosity of one alumna."

Information and learning resources. In the library stacks and in computer labs, our students are taking advantage of all the resources we can give them as they tackle assignments, refine their Senior Comps, or simply satisfy their own intellectual curiosity. Up-to-date information and learning resources are critical to both our students and our faculty as they go about their work.

By enhancing our on-line research databases, by providing full Internet access and networking, and by creating additional group study facilities on-line, we can ensure that our campus community benefits from the remarkable opportunities that the latest technologies offer.

Investing in the Future

Alumni and friends of the College are Allegheny's most generous supporters. You, more than anyone, know the true value of an Allegheny education. By participating in Tradition & Transformation, you can help place that education within the reach of every student who has worked hard to earn a place on campus. Please join us in investing in the College's future - and in paying tribute to our extraordinary past.

"One thing about my Allegheny experience that has continued to benefit me throughout my career is what is now known as 'experiential learning.' By reading a book, you can learn a certain amount. But when you experience those things, the book comes to life." - Marty Pfinsgraff '77
