The Allegheny Advantage:
Allegheny College, the nation's 32nd oldest college, is a nationally recognized
college of the liberal arts and sciences. Allegheny's 2,100 students are active
in social, economic, and environmental issues and work collaboratively with
faculty as part of the learning process. The College's nationally recognized
programs such as the Center for Political Participation, the Center for Experiential
Learning, and the Center for Economic and Environmental Development offer powerful
and engaging out-of-classroom experiences. In 2002 Allegheny College was selected
as one of ten founding institutions to participate in Project Pericles, a not-for-profit
organization funded by the Eugene M. Lang Foundation, committed to instilling
in students a sense of social responsibility and civic concern.
With about 40 programs of study and the capstone comprehensive Senior Project,
the College's rigorous education results in benefits that include acceptance
rates to medical and law school that are twice the national average. And Allegheny's
geographic setting is ideal for our active student population, who enjoy biking,
rock climbing, canoeing, and kayaking.
We're proud of Allegheny's beautiful campus and cutting-edge technologies.
And we know that our professors are leading scholars who pride themselves even
more on being among the best teachers in the nation. But it's our students who
make Allegheny the unique and special place that it is.
How do we characterize them? Though it's impossible to label them, they do
share some common characteristics. You'll find an abiding passion for learning
and life, a spirit of camaraderie and shared inquiry that spans individuals
as well as areas of study. And you'll see over and over again such a variety
of interests and passions and skills that after a while unusual combinations
don't seem so unusual at all.
Allegheny is not for everybody. If you're the kind of student who finds labels
reassuring...if you're looking for a narrow technical training...if you're in
search of the shortest distance between point A and point B...then maybe another
college will be better for you.
But, if you prefer the scenic route...if you recognize that everything you
experience between points A and B will make you appreciate point B that much
more...if you've noticed that when life gives you a choice between two things,
you're tempted to answer, "Both!" or simply, "Yes!"...if
you start to get excited because you sense there is a college willing to echo
the resounding YES from the various unusual combinations you feel within yourself...then
we look forward to meeting you.
