The Allegheny Advantage:
At Allegheny, the "student" in student-athlete does more than merely
precede "athlete" in the often-used phrase. At Allegheny, they are respected
for wearing both hats, managing rigorous academic challenges and meeting
the demands of highly competitive athletic programs. This balancing
act requires time-management skills, careful planning and a strong sense
of values, yet it is accomplished year in and year out. Professors realize
the special commitment required by athletics, and many faculty are among
the most avid supporters of Gator teams.
"Allegheny students epitomize the philosophy of Division III athletics.
These are young men and women who combine the best elements of mind
and body to achieve success in both the classroom and on the playing
fields,"says professor of economics and faculty athletic representative
Janine Sickafuse.
Numerous soccer players attest to this level of achievement. 1998
Allegheny graduate Ken Cohen, a four-time All-NCAC goalkeeper, was named
to the GTE Academic All-District team. He is currently attending the
University of Delaware graduate school, working toward a master's degree
in history. In 1993-94, the soccer program boasted a pair of Phi Beta
Kappa graduates, Ziv Arie and Mike Newman. Arie, a native
of Kiriat-Ono, Israel, was also one of only two Allegheny seniors to
graduate summa cum laude, earning a 3.9 grade point average in economics.
Arie also was a two-time all-region pick and a first team GTE Academic
All-American.
"I really didn't know what to expect when I first came here,"Arie
remembered. "I made the right choice. I made a lot of friends, learned
a lot about life and opened myself to the world."
Allegheny is especially proud to be a college where students can compete
and succeed in athletics and in other areas of campus life, while still
excelling in the classroom.
