The Allegheny Advantage:
Allegheny is one of the oldest and most respected liberal arts colleges
in the country. While the College has highly regarded academic and athletic
reputations, Allegheny's greatest strength is its people, especially
its diverse student body.
If you are looking for an institution which will excite and challenge
you, Allegheny is the place. We invite you to experience the "Allegheny
Advantage."
At Allegheny, the "student" in student-athlete does more
than merely precede "athlete." At Allegheny, they are respected
for wearing both hats, managing rigorous academic challenges and meeting
the demands of highly competitive athletic programs.
This balancing act requires time management skills, careful planning
and a strong sense of values, yet it is accomplished every year. Professors
realize the special commitment required by athletics, and many faculty
are among the most avid supporters of Gator teams.
Retired English professor Paul Zolbrod explains it this way: "The
myth of the unintellectual athlete is just that, a myth. I'm convinced
that anyone who has worked hard enough to make a varsity team can work
hard enough to make the honor roll."
Allegheny is especially proud to be a college where students can compete
and succeed in athletics and in other areas of campus life, while still
excelling in the classroom.
Because of this, Allegheny has consistently recruited quality student-athletes
like Stanley Drayton, an All-American in both football and track who
graduated in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in English.
"It came down to academics, really," Drayton said. "I
narrowed it down to where athletics weren't that important. I liked
the approach that Allegheny took: academics first, athletics second.
I'm lucky that I selected a school that is competitive academically
and athletically, and where I could excel in more than one sport."
