Records fall in Gator's 68-13 win over Kenyon

Gambier, Ohio - October 13, 2001 - The Allegheny College football team put a dent in its own record book with today's 68-13 win over Kenyon College in front of 450 here today. The Gators tied four single-game school records today, led by Bubba Smith, who had a career day, completing 25-of-39 passes for 365 yards and six touchdowns. The yards and TD passes are each school records.

As a team, the Gators passed for 391 yards, a school record, and Jon Turner had 10 receptions for 177 yards and four touchdowns, tying a school record for TD catches. Jamie Sye carried 15 times for 108 yards and a score, the first 100-yard game of his career. On the afternoon, the Allegheny offense piled up 655 total yards, compared to just 179 for the Lords.

Smith's 365 yards breaks the former record of 358 yards set by Kyle Adamson at Mount Union on Nov. 23, 1996, while Smith's six TD passes broke the mark he shared with Mike Ganey. Each threw five in a game, Smith last week in a 57-0 win over Hiram and Ganey on Oct. 18, 1969 in a 70-39 win over Carnegie Mellon. Turner's four touchdown catches tied the record set by Jay Lewis, accomplished on the same day as Ganey's record.

Smith and Turner connected on TD passes of 6, 35, 72 and 2 yards, all before halftime, into which the Gators took a 41-3 lead. Smith also hooked up twice with Brian Woods, who finished with four catches for 40 yards and five rushes for 46 yards. Jared McNeilly had six catches for 87 yards, while Wyatt Jones had five rushes for 62 yards and a score. Marty Spieler threw his first career touchdown pass, 26 yards to Will McMahon, who made his first career reception on the play.

Defensively, the Gators were led by Ralph Tune who had five tackles, three for a loss, while Matt Komar, Curtis Reeves and Derek Vikara all had interceptions. Matt Majocka, Bryan Johnston each had five tackles, while Evan Kormos had a team-best six hits.

The Gators have now outscored Kenyon 216-13 in the last four meetings between the schools. The win upped Allegheny's record to 3-3 (3-1 NCAC), while Kenyon fell to 0-5 (0-3 NCAC). The Gators are next in action on Saturday, October 20, when they travel to Frostburg State for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
