Gators Open Spring With Win Over Tigers

ERIE, Pa. - The Allegheny men's tennis team (6-1, 1-0 NCAC) picked up right where they left off in the fall by defeating Wittenberg (1-2, 1-1 NCAC) 9-0 in the Gators' first match of the spring season.

The Gators opened with a sweep in doubles competition, as Andy Zipf (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Matt Winters (The Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands) scored an 8-4 win at #1. Ben Hurtuk (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/Chagrin Falls) and Evan Gordon (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) followed with an 8-3 victory at #2 while Nick Lieb (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and Eric Roginek (Fresh Meadows, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) picked up an 8-1 win at #3.

Zipf went on to win in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) over Brad Seymour in #1 singles while Winters won 6-0, 6-0 over Andrew Young at #2.

Zack Kerosky (Ashtabula, Ohio/Lakeside) won 6-1, 6-4 at #3 while Roginek picked up a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 victory in a long battle at #4.

Hurtuk and Gordon picked up single set wins, by scores of 6-3 and 6-0 at #5 and #6, respectively.

Allegheny has the following two weeks off from competition as the team prepares for its spring trip to Hilton Head, S.C. from March 16-19. The Gators open against Nebraska Wesleyan at 3:00 p.m. on the 16th.
