Allegheny Awards

Special awards have been created to recognize members of the Allegheny community for their significant accomplishments, and we value your suggestions of deserving individuals at any time. Awards are presented annually at the Alumni Luncheon and Awards Ceremony during Reunion Weekend. The award descriptions are listed below.

There are three ways to submit a nomination:

  1. Click on the "Nomination Form" link located beneath each award description to submit a nomination online.
  2. E-mail your nomination to phil.foxman@allegheny.edu
  3. Send a letter via the U.S. Postal Service to Phil Foxman, Director of Alumni Affairs, 520 North Main Street, Allegheny College, Meadville, PA 16335.

The Alumni Medal
The Alumni Medal is the College's oldest and most prestigious recognition and is awarded for steadfast loyalty and many years of distinguished service to Allegheny.

Teaching Awards

The Julian Ross Award for Excellence in Teaching
The Julian Ross Award for Excellence in Teaching is presented to a faculty member who has been at Allegheny College for more than ten years. The award is based on the following criteria for an outstanding teacher: encourages independent thinking; states clearly course goals and objectives; provides sympathetic and constructive assistance; communicates knowledge and abstract ideas clearly; inspires interest and enthusiasm; encourages questions and participation; prepares well for classes; possesses an excellent, up-to-date command of his or her specialties; demonstrates professional and personal integrity; exhibits fairness in devising and grading examinations; prepares appropriate and challenging assignments and examinations; and provides sound and reliable academic advising.

The Thoburn Award for Excellence in Teaching
The Thoburn Award for Excellence in Teaching is presented to a faculty member who has been at Allegheny College for ten years or less and has demonstrated outstanding teaching as evidenced by innovative pedagogy, creative course development, sustained commitment to student learning, and support from faculty, alumni, and students.

Distinguished Service Award

The Robert T. Sherman Distinguished Service Award
The Robert T. Sherman Distinguished Service Award is given to an Allegheny employee (or organization) who has provided significant long-term support to College programs or activities in areas not required by their job description (or organizational purposes). The recipient must be a current or retired employee (having completed a minimum five years of service) or have provided excellence in the performance of his/her job, which made a significant extra contribution to the College in ways which have enhanced the interest or goals of the Alumni Association.

Athletic Hall of Fame
Athletic Hall of Fame Nominees may include athletes, teams, coaches, trainers, or any other people who have made outstanding contributions to varsity athletics at Allegheny. The nomination information should include the sport(s) played; collegiate accomplishments; and special contribution to the College, its athletic program or the community. An individual, team, or coach may be nominated anytime beginning 10 years after graduation.
