His Advice to Students:
"Virtually all of the leaders in business and medicine I know frequently express how impressed by and how eager they are to help students who initiate contact with them. Bottom line: just email the people you admire and would love to work with."
Anthony Paravati is not your average medical student. He is currently attending Dartmouth, where he is obtaining not only a medical degree but also a master's in business administration.
"I think there are many people in medicine who would think that an MD/MBA is unusual," says Paravati, who adds that it was connections at Allegheny—specifically with Allegheny alum and guest professor Chris Allison '83—that convinced him to pursue this unusual combination.
As a neuroscience major at Allegheny, Paravati studied topics that would benefit him in medical school. "Classes in animal physiology and molecular and cellular biology provided me with a strong and valuable introduction to the basic science curriculum of the first year of medical school," he says. His economics minor was helpful as well. "It opened up the world of finance and entrepreneurship to me."
Paravati advises students in any field to make connections. "Initiate relationships with key mentors, people who can be portals to opportunities and insights that will give you the upper hand in today's very competitive job and graduate admissions markets," he says. "Virtually all of the leaders in business and medicine I know frequently express how impressed by and how eager they are to help students who initiate contact with them. Bottom line: just email the people you admire and would love to work with."
