Her Advice to Students: "Apply to smaller [graduate] schools, because there is a stronger possibility of scholarship opportunities."
With nearly two years under her belt at Ohio Northern University School of Law, Janelle Hackman knows what makes a superior law student. And she says that Allegheny is where she first learned many of the skills necessary to be such a student.
"Allegheny instilled in me a strong work ethic early on and cultivated the public speaking skills necessary in law school," she says. "The comp oral is a good experience for being put on the spot to talk about what you have been researching." Hackman specifically credits her work as a history major with helping her succeed. "As with the history major, law school entails a significant amount of reading and class preparation," she says.
Though she has graduated, Hackman stays connected to Allegheny and especially tries to keep in touch with younger members of her sorority. She fondly remembers participating in an Experiential Learning tour to South Africa and has since pursued her love of travel, studying law in Greece, Italy, and Spain. She recently came back to visit Allegheny. "I explored the campus, taking in all the changes," she says. "The library looks wonderful."
Hackman has plenty of advice for fellow Gators looking to pursue a law degree. "Apply to smaller schools, because there is a stronger possibility of scholarship opportunities," she says. She also recommends considering a summer starter program if it is available. "Taking two classes over the summer is a better way to get acclimated to law school than coming in during the fall with a full load," she notes. Finally, she acknowledges that the name "Allegheny" often speaks for itself. "Ohio Northern is familiar with Allegheny and the work ethic Allegheny students usually have."
