His Advice to Students:
"More than anything, the clubs and opportunities that were open to me [at Allegheny] trained me for my job."
It's an important year for Dan Conant. As the north country field organizer for the New Hampshire Democratic Party, Dan manages the election campaign in the northern half of the state, working even at the presidential level. He also recruits and trains party volunteers.
"My job is about convincing a majority of the people that your vision for the direction of our communities and nation is the right way to go," he says.
Allegheny has helped Conant in many ways. His comp taught him to manage a long-term project and take constructive criticism in stride. Studying French has given him an advantage with the many French-Canadian immigrants in northern New Hampshire. As an interdisciplinary International Studies major, Conant was exposed to different ways of thinking. "More than anything," he notes, "the clubs and opportunities that were open to me trained me for my job. College Democrats, Allegheny Student Government, and working with the Crawford County Democrats were all a vital part of my education."
Even with his busy, schedule, Conant finds time to stay connected to Allegheny. He helps Admissions write Christmas cards to prospective students, shares advice with on-campus political organizations, and keeps the connections he made as an undergraduate. "I've got great friends that I talk to often. They're a big part of my life," he says. "Half of my wedding guest list is Alleghenians!"
