Admission Requirements

Application and Fee: The application should be completed and returned to the Office of Admissions, together with a $35 application fee payable to Allegheny College.

High School Transcript/School Report: You should complete the upper section of the "School Report" form and provide a transcript from a reputable home-school program or a detailed schedule of your academic coursework. On this schedule you may include the subjects studied, textbooks used, and time spent in each area of study. You can also include graded assignments, course outlines or syllabi, and a resume of activities you are involved in. You may then forward the completed form, along with a copy of your high school transcript or detailed schedule and any other materials, to Allegheny College. In addition, if you have taken college courses for credit, please forward an official transcript from the appropriate institution.

Teacher Evaluation: You are asked to have at least one letter of recommendation from a teacher, director, tutor or evaluator of your home-school program, and a description of the level of your instruction from the person who has been most responsible for your academic learning forwarded to the Office of Admissions.

Recommendation from a non-family member: This recommendation can come from anyone outside your family who knows you well and who can evaluate your talents and strengths. Examples include: a pastor/priest, employer, educational instructor, or coach. It can be sent in letter form, or you may use the Teacher Evaluation form.

Entrance Examinations: As an applicant, you are required to take either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT) not later than January of the final year of high school and are expected to arrange for the results to be forwarded directly to Allegheny College. SAT Subject Tests of the College Board are optional but are recommended for use in counseling. It is strongly recommended that you take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if English is your second language.

Personal Statement: The last portion of the application is the Personal Statement. Please review the suggested topics and complete an essay that will be included with your application file. You must submit this written statement in order to complete your admissions application.

The Application Supplement: Included with the formal Application for Admission is the Application Supplement. The Office of Admissions asks that you complete this brief, but important informational sheet and return it with your application. You can download a PDF version or complete the supplement on line.

Admissions interview: We strongly encourage all home-schooled students interested in admission to schedule an admission interview. Your visit to the Allegheny campus will enable you to appraise the College's educational programs, campus atmosphere, and physical facilities. Although a meeting with a member of the admissions staff is not a requirement for admission, this conference can provide a deeper insight into the character and personality of the College. Individuals wishing to visit the campus should contact the Office of Admissions (1-800-521-5293), preferably 10 to 14 days in advance to confirm arrangements. Meetings with members of the faculty or with other members of the Allegheny community can also be scheduled upon request. Interviews/individual conferences are offered weekdays all year, plus school year Saturday mornings. For more information on these topics, visit campus visits or off-campus interviews. (Overnight stays are available during the academic year on Sundays through Thursdays with two-week advance notice. The Overnight Coordinator can be reached directly at (814) 332-4740 or visa@allegheny.edu. Please note that overnight stays are not available during the week of final exams at the end of each semester.)
