Hillel: A Place to Connect and LearnHillel

A Foundation for Jewish Campus Life at Allegheny College

Allegheny Hillel has been active on the Allegheny campus since 1982. By sponsoring religious, cultural and interfaith events, Allegheny Hillel educates the College and Meadville communities about important Jewish topics, while providing fellowship for Jewish students.

A Tradition of Support

All Jewish students are welcomed as members of Hillel upon matriculation. Hillel offers Allegheny students a place to be open and educated about their own religion, while at the same time learning about other faith traditions in our college community. In addition to about 50 Jewish students on campus, Allegheny is home to nearly 20 Jewish faculty and administrators. A number of supportive alumni and trustees contribute to our continuing success through program funding and ongoing communication.

In 2005 Yana Geyfman became the Hillel advisor and an admissions counselor. Working in both Admissions and Religious Life, Yana serves as the liaison between students, faculty, and administrators regarding the Jewish community on and off campus.

A Tradition of Faith

Hillel

Hillel sponsors a number of events over the course of the year. Some correspond with Jewish holidays, while others support current events or student interests. Many events are held at the local Jewish Community Center (JCC), adjacent to campus.

Activities include:

A Tradition of Fun

Hillel

Beginning with a Rosh Hashanah bagel brunch as the fall semester begins, Allegheny students and faculty members have many opportunities to socialize and celebrate the new year together. Hillel also organizes various types of Jewish entertainment. Over the years, we have welcomed musical groups, comedians, and speakers and have sponsored movies, art exhibits, and other activities. Such programming offers Jewish students a chance to socialize, while introducing the larger Allegheny community to Jewish religion and culture.

Hillel is committed to developing strong leaders and has sent students to regional, state, and national conferences. Students have the opportunity to meet leaders from other colleges, learn about national organization, hone their leadership skills, and create intercollegiate connections that enhance our program.
