Science, Health and Society Minor

This minor offers two tracks, one open to all majors and one for humanities or social science majors. The latter may be particularly useful for students who are having trouble scheduling their major and the pre-health core curriculum. It can sometimes be quite a challenge to coordinate a major, a minor and the pre-health core. This option allows for some double-counting of courses (minor and pre-health core). Because it offers a broad view of the health care field, the alternate track may be especially helpful for a student who is unsure of what field of medicine s/he wants to pursue or simply wants to better understand the "big picture".

Option A: Open to students majoring in the Humanities or Social Sciences

Take two of the following introductory science course sequences:

Take one upper level elective (see list below)
Take LS 550 (see below)
Complete 84 hours of shadowing/service in a health related field
Submission of Science, Health, and Society Portfolio

Option B: Open to all students

Take four courses from the following three areas. You must take at least one course from each area:

1. Health Foundations

2. Social Foundation

3. Ethics Foundations

Take one upper level elective (see list below)
Take LS 550 (see below)
Complete 84 hours of shadowing/service in a health related field
Submission of Science, Health, and Society Portfolio

Upper Level Electives:

LS 550: Seminar in Science, Health, and Society: Can be taken in either the junior or senior year. Not open to first year students or sophomores. Must have completed 60 (3/4) of the service/shadowing hours.

Please note: Before receiving a signature for this minor, students must present a plan for courses they will take to complete this minor. Students must declare this minor before the end of the first semester of their junior year.
