What Are Medical Schools Looking For?

Cooperative Programs: Nursing

3-4 (Doctor of Nursing), Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing of Case Western Reserve

The student will receive the Bachelor's Degree from Allegheny College after successful completion of two years of advanced study at the nursing school. Students in this program must meet the major requirements of their academic department or a student-designed major, if applicable, and all other academic requirements of Allegheny College. Please refer to "Eligibility and Planning". The Allegheny faculty are willing to consider 3-2 programs leading to a BS in Nursing from other schools on an individual basis. Students should obtain and read the catalogues of the nursing schools to which they want to apply or contact the Admissions Office of those schools directly. Proposals for such programs must be initiated through and approved by the Health Professions Advisor, K. Peterson, the Health Professions Advisory Committee, and the Registrar, Dr. Sheffield prior to being presented to the faculty.

Admission to nursing school is competitive and the existence of a cooperative program arrangement between Allegheny College and the other institution does not assure an Allegheny student admission.

In addition to providing basic preparation for direct patient care, R.N. licensure and practice of professional nursing, the Bolton School of Nursing program includes an area of focus for advanced practice which is selected by the student, including health planning, policy and information management, and clinical investigation. Graduates are prepared to function at an advanced level in clinical practice and clinical research. All students currently enrolled in the program hold baccalaureate degrees or have completed a minimum of 90 hours of course work at a college or university that will grant them a degree after completion of one or two years in this ND program. ND students hold degrees in a variety of disciplines including the natural and social sciences as well as the humanities and arts.
