Transitions from Communism: A Case Study of Ukraine
Description:
How do a people become a nation? Students seek to answer this question by exploring the Ukraine that has emerged less than 20 years after the collapse of communism. Particular emphasis is placed on the creation of a Ukrainian national history and how the Ukrainian people are dealing with the legacies of Soviet rule--environmental degradation, cultural differences, economic transformations, and political change. From our base in Kyiv, we have daily interactions with Ukrainian scholars and students, visit the Chernobyl nuclear accident site, see historical landmarks and cultural events, and travel to either the Crimea on the Black Sea or the predominantly Russian eastern Ukraine.
