Dear Non-Profit,
We invite your organization to participate in the VISTA (Volunteers In Service to America) initiative taking place within Erie and Crawford Counties.
Twenty fulltime Americorps*VISTAs will be placed in Erie and Crawford Counties beginning in July 2004. These VISTAs will serve at agencies or organizations to develop new projects, or a new aspect of existing projects, that address the needs of children and youth in poverty. If your agency would like to be considered for a VISTA Volunteer please complete the application and return by February 23, 2004.
Americorp*VISTAs act as capacity builders which means they do not perform direct service while in their role as VISTAs. Instead they run trainings, recruit and support volunteers, and plan and direct programs. Additionally, they can do fundraising, grant writing, and public relations work.
The obligations of the agencies include $500 for training support and program administration, $1,000 in-kind contributions comprised of onsite supervision, office space and office supplies. The details are spelled out in the application.
VISTAs will be recruited nationally as well as locally. The agencies that have been selected for the program will be responsible for making the final selection of the VISTA. A VISTA Volunteer serves full-time for one full year. They receive a monthly allowance of approximately $730 from the Corporation for National and Community Service. Additionally, upon completion of service the VISTA receives either an education award of $4,725 or a stipend of $1,200.
