Academic Service-Learning is a combination of service that meets real community needs as articulated by the community and structured academic study that meets the curricular goals of the faculty and students.

Integrating service-learning into a course is done on an individual basis. The
design of the service component will be unique to the particular professor and the particular course. The Office of Community Service and Service-Learning, in ACCEL offers assistance to faculty implementing service-learning pedagogy. Through student service leaders the office maintains ongoing partnerships with approximately 30 agencies and organizations in the region.

The Service-Learning Challenge is a student-led effort that began in the spring
of 2000. The goal of the program is to expand academic service-learning at Allegheny. Student leaders partner with faculty members who are teaching courses with a service-learning component. The student leaders receive training on the components necessary for the effective use of service as a pedagogical tool.

A Summer Service-Learning Course design workshop is conducted each summer to assist faculty members in developing service-learning courses. The multi-day workshop includes involvement at service sites and discussions with community partners.

The ACCEL library on the second floor of the ACCEL suite in Reis maintains a significant listing of service-learning resources. Some volumes contain sample syllabi from a wide variety or courses and disciplines. These resources can be checked out for period of two weeks.

Non-Credit Bearing Service-Learning Opportunities are also sponsored by ACCEL. They include Alternative Spring Break Programs, the Bonner AmeriCorps program and Experiential Learning service-related internships and experiences. Faculty are encouraged to participate in these programs.
