Opportunities
Internships
- Students have an opportunity to complete a two-semester internship at
a local women's services or battered women's shelter that includes intensive
certified volunteer training and field research in the service area of
their own choosing.
- A Media Services intern has the opportunity to develop print and web
publications for Women's Studies and assist in events programming.
Co-Curricular Activities
- Work-study students assist with program events and contribute to the
newsletter.
- Women's History Month (March) events, co-sponsored by the women's studies
program, raise awareness of women's issues. Recent events included a lecture
and workshop by Tibetan Buddhist Lama Shenpen and a panel discussion titled "Title
IX: The Past, Present and Future of Women's Athletics."
- First Thursday film series shows full-length documentary and feature
films; Third Wednesday series combines viewing of short subjects with lunch
and discussion.
- On-campus events co-sponsored by the women's studies program include:
Workshop for Adolescent Girls, "History and Memory: Gay and Lesbian
Literature Since World War II," Take Back the Night march and rally,
a Women and Science Reading Group.
- Students present work in the "Women's Studies Forum: Recent Work
from Student Scholars"
Clubs
Pride Alliance (formerly known as The Committee in Support
of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered People) works to create a positive
environment for sexual diversity and sponsors events including Coming Out
Day, Day of Silence, the Gay Pride Dance, and the Lesbian and Gay Film Series.
Recent visitors brought to campus include Gerry Pearlberg and Marilyn Hacker.
Prizes
Outstanding Senior Major Prize: For exceptional academic
achievement, performance in the seminar, and contribution to the general
life of the program.
Graduate School/Careers
Students can pursue advanced degrees in women's studies,
social work, and related fields where a specialty in women's issues or feminist
methodology is appropriate (example: women's health). The most popular career
choices include law, social work, psychology, and human service professions.
