Student Profile
Kristie
Seelman
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Major: Psychology
Minor: Values and Ethics in Social Action
“I like the small classes and the fact that the professors
know you. You can learn a lot more when you interact with the professors.”
I’m realizing how interconnected departments can be,” says
Kristie Seelman. “We can learn about psychology through different
mediums, including literary analysis and community service.”
Kristie knew she wanted to major in psychology when she arrived at Allegheny.
But she never expected to learn developmental psychology theories through
short stories—as in her “Literary Analysis of Child Development” class.

The Psychology Department
Among liberal arts college psychology departments, the large
size of Allegheny's facilitates unusual depth and breadth of study. Equally
important, our faculty's commitment to teaching and "mentoring" undergraduates
ensures that students are actively engaged in the field.
Major and Minor Programs
Major in Psychology (B.A. or B.S. Degree)
Provides both breadth in the general field and depth in
a specialized area. At least 40 semester hours are taken. Three courses cover
the basic principles and methods (the Sophomore Seminar in Psychology, Research
Design and Statistics I and II). Three courses explore the major subfields-one
is selected from each Core Category (Basic Processes, Human Processes, Individual
Differences). In-depth work in an area of personal interest comprises five
courses-two Advanced Topics courses, a Junior Seminar and the Senior Project
(see Student Research).
Special Majors
Self-designed majors and double majors are available (e.g.,
psychology and biology, psychology and art, psychology and economics or political
science, etc.)
Minor in Psychology
Research Design and Statistics I, one course from each of
two Core Categories, one Advanced Topics course, and one elective.
