Tracy Moore
Columbus, Ohio
Major: Physics
Minors: Studio Art
Tracy Moore is interested in the problem solving and intricate explanation of the universe that her physics major offers.
Thanks to hard work, some luck and the encouragement of the physics department faculty, Tracy is now able to contribute to physics research.
Last summer, Tracy traveled to Ohio State University where she studied with twelve other students, selected from across the country. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the program offers research experience to undergraduates. “I learned to program in C and wrote a genetic algorithm to aid in the continuum generation research my advisor was investigating,” she says. “I worked in the lab next to grad students and felt like I furthered significant research.”
Next summer Tracy plans to work as a research assistant with Professor Doros Petasis on a project at Carnegie Mellon University. Since they’ll be working with CMU’s Low Energy Electron Microscope (LEEM), she is completing an independent study with Dr. Petasis in order to learn more about the LEEM.
A studio art minor, Tracy also volunteers for the local animal shelter and Friends of Youth, serves as a physics tutor and teaching assistant, and was recently elected president of the Society of Physics Students. Through the Allegheny College Center for Experiential Learning (ACCEL) program, Tracy traveled to Vienna, where she studied the history of Viennese music and German.
