Student Profile

Rachael McDonald Rachael McDonald
Kingston, Jamaica
Major: Modern and Classical Language
Minor: Psychology

Like many liberal arts college students, Rachael McDonald came to Allegheny to explore her options. Although she originally intended to become a doctor, her plans soon changed.

During her first year, Rachael took an introductory Spanish class. Later, as part of an independent study sponsored by the language department, Rachael taught Spanish to area third grade children. As a result, she fell in love with both the language and the department.

“The Allegheny Spanish department brings a lot to the table that other colleges might ignore,” she says. “The faculty is constantly working with students, showing them all that Español has to offer. Each professor brings his or her touch of culture and language.”

In addition, Rachael believes that the College’s commitment to having an on-campus Spanish House helps further promote the awareness of the many facets of Spanish culture on campus.

“I am really happy that I came to Allegheny,” she says. “I don’t think I would have ever fallen in love with Spanish elsewhere. I’m thankful to the professors in the department who have encouraged me and who continue to push me in this direction.” Upon graduation, Rachael hopes to continue her studies in graduate school.
