Opportunities
Experiential Learning
- Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Student Intern Program (work
experience in Washington, D.C., for students interested in international
relations careers).
- Students have traditionally attended professional seminars and meetings,
often presenting papers.
- Each year Allegheny attends the Harvard National Model United Nations,
the country's largest and most prestigious Model UN event (attracting 2,000
students from more than 120 institutions). Recently, two Alleghenians were
among 60 participants honored for their presentations.
- Washington Semester at American University. Students study source materials
and government institutions in the nation's capital. Internships and coursework
in several areas including law, politics, journalism, and environmental
policy.
- EL Summer Study Tour Courses offer students the opportunity to learn
and travel under the direction of Allegheny faculty members. The three-week
courses begin after the spring semester concludes and are each worth four
credit hours toward graduation. Spring 2005 topics include:
- Transitions from Communism: A Case Study of Urkaine
- Oh, Canada! A Cultural Study Across a Land of Contradiction
- Alaska: Environmental Frontier
- The Many Faces of Classical Music and Art in Austria and Italy
- Vanishing China - Emerging China
- South Africa: Microcosm of the World
- 13 Ways of Looking at a Greek Island
- EL Summer Internships offer three-week work experiences at a variety
of organizations in Boston, New York City, and Washington, D.C. These are
internships offered primarily through our alumni in those regions. Allegheny
College supports this initiative by securing housing for the three-week
experience.
Study Abroad
Study abroad is strongly encouraged. The College sponsors
a range of study-abroad programs that are open to all Allegheny students
who meet the specific program requirements. These include direct enrollment
and exchange programs at universities in Australia (James Cook University), China (Capital Normal University),
England (Lancaster University and University of Oxford), France (Université Catholique
de l'Ouest), Germany (Universität Tübingen) and South Africa (University
of Natal); language and area studies programs in Cologne, Germany; Seville,
Spain; Angers, France; Queretero, Mexico; and Haifa, Israel; internships
in Paris, France; Nairobi, Kenya; Quito, Ecuador; Dakar, Senegal; and Jaipur,
India; specialized programs in Costa Rica (School for Field Studies) and
Israel (Arava Institute for Environmental Studies).
Allegheny's financial aid packages support study in all
Allegheny-sponsored programs. Students not enrolling in the College-sponsored
programs may, with the approval of the International Studies Committee and
the Director of International Programs and Services, participate in other programs.
Study abroad may exempt students from certain courses required for the major.
The Wayne Reynolds Merrick Fellowship in International Studies
is available to assist in funding for year, semester or summer study abroad.
Opportunities
- Extensive cocurricular activities. Model United Nations, Allegheny Research
Interest Group, Amnesty International chapter, World Issues Forum, International
Club, Young Democrats, College Republicans, mock conventions and elections,
Debate Team.
- International film festivals.
- Language tables. Several days each week, interested students and faculty
meet together for lunch. There are regular tables in French, German, Russian,
and Spanish.
- Special Interest Houses.
College-owned houses organized around themes
including the International House and special
language houses.
Graduate School
- About 35% of our majors eventually attend graduate or professional school.
About 20% go on directly.

Career Data
- About 80% of our majors seek employment directly following graduation.
The most popular fields for those with bachelor's degrees: government and
military research, business management, and insurance.
- The most popular field for those with advanced degrees is law (especially
international trade law).
