Joe Vickless
Washington, Pennsylvania
Major: English
Minors: Pyschology, Classical Studies
What are you going to do after you graduate?” This question often vexes English majors, who traditionally answer with vague intentions of becoming a writer or a teacher. How about an attorney? Joe Vickless, class of 2003, is doing just that.
“I chose English as my major because I am interested in the subject, and law programs are traditionally built around reading and writing,” says Joe. He feels that Allegheny’s English program is better suited to his goals than traditional pre-law majors, and also affords him more opportunities with his double minors of psychology and classical studies. In addition, Joe intends to complete coursework for teaching certification through a program at the University of Pittsburgh. Ever practical, Joe figures he can teach while earning money for law school.
Since a broad and varied background will enrich him, whatever career he pursues, Joe takes full advantage of the liberal arts opportunities at Allegheny. He has interned at the Meadville Children’s Center, specializing in childcare, while preparing lesson plans and teaching children in a real-world environment. He has also traveled to Greece to study ancient literature, as part of a study tour with Professor Christopher Bakken.
Joe participates in swing dancing, intramural sports, the Student Experimental Theatre group, and the Outing Club. During summers he serves as an admissions tour guide, showing off his campus to future Allegheny students.
