Claude Ogoe’s desire for “true learning” found him a second home in Allegheny’s chemistry department.
“My professors always put the emphasis on understanding what is going on rather than just learning the cold facts,” says Claude.
“That’s what I always wanted my college experience to be like.” The science department also pushes hands-on experience.
“Part of understanding chemistry comes from being able to do chemistry. Being able to work in labs has expanded my knowledge and made me realize why chemistry is so important in the world.”
During the summer, Claude interned under assistant professor of chemistry Shaun Murphree, working on the synthesis of acridones—intermediate compounds used to formulate pigments—as part of a Bayer Corporation project.
“I had taken organic chemistry prior to working with Dr. Murphree on this project,” Claude says. “This internship was a great way for me to transfer what I learned in class to real-life work. I got to apply my knowledge in a way that was helpful to Bayer, and it also allowed me to see what I had been studying.”
Claude hopes to attend medical school in the United States and then wants to conduct more research on the efficacy of pharmaceutical products.
