Opportunities

Summer Research

Many Allegheny faculty secure grants that support summer student work. Allegheny students are also successful at obtaining internships at other academic institutions and at government or industrial labs.

Professional Conferences

Students and faculty regularly attend and make presentations at professional conferences such as meetings of the American Chemical Society and the National Conference on Undergraduate Research.

Graduate School

Most of our graduates attend graduate or professional school. Most of the students receive full financial assistance to attend graduate school. Some of the schools that our graduates attend are:

Special Lectures

The Biology, Chemistry and Physics departments have stimulating seminar programs that bring more than a dozen outside speakers to campus each year. Many of these speakers deliver seminars of interest to biochemistry majors. In addition, the annual Lord Lecture brings some of the nation's most distinguished chemists to the College for residencies of up to one week. Recent Lord Lecturers include Dudley Herschbach, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and George Whitesides, Mallinckrodt Professor of Chemistry at Harvard University and winner of the 1998 National Medal of Science.

Career Data

Our Biochemistry Program prepares students to attend graduate school in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biophysics, Immunology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Pharmacology, etc. Biochemistry majors are also prepared to attend medical school or seek employment in government and industrial laboratories.
