Heather Green feels one of the Allegheny art department’s biggest strengths, beyond its close student-faculty interaction, is the faculty’s holistic approach to art—and life.
“My professors challenge me to see my art in ways I may not have considered,” she says. “They expect me to be able to brainstorm, write, reflect, and solve problems—not just make art.
“In life, there’s a lot of risk-taking,” she explains. “With your artwork you need to take risks as well, because it may give you that new experience you need, and it may make your artwork better.
“At a scholars’ weekend panel, I heard a senior talk about his project and was impressed by how impassioned he was about his work. I wanted to be that excited and have that experience.”
And she is. For her senior comprehensive project, Heather is completing a project on “object transformation” where she will turn bowling pins into penguins and then have them “invade the gallery.” While some penguins will be tracking mud into the gallery, others will be parachuting in or peeping about other students’ pieces.
